I have only seen one mole in my life. It was when Sam was at Camp Chawanakee Boy Scout Camp near Shaver Lake in the Sierras. A mole surfaced above ground near the base of a pine tree, in the needles, and fortunately I had my camera nearby. The mole is truly a digging machine. It could dig so fast that it would literally disappear underground in a few seconds. The California mole is found in most of California, a portion of western Nevada and south-central Oregon. The head and body are 5 or 6 inches long and the tail is about 1 1/2 inches long. They are black to blackish brown and the tail has just a small amount of hair on it.
The nose is bare and the front feet are like paddles with claws.
